SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Crystal Manning
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 13\, 2025 for our guest speaker Crystal Manning! \nCrystal is a Kansas City fabric and quilt artist who will share a trunk show of her latest and favorite quilts. \nAfter spending a decade as a graphic designer\, Crystal turned her artistic talents toward surface and textile pattern design. In 2015\, she bought her first sewing machine and began teaching herself to sew\, using her custom-printed Spoonflower fabrics. Though she endured the occasional pinprick and became well-acquainted with her seam ripper\, her passion for sewing and fabric design flourished. \nSince 2017\, Crystal has been designing fabric for Moda Fabrics\, inspiring sewists to create with her stylish collections. She also designs quilt patterns to complement her fabric lines.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Negative Space Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Discover the Power of Negative Space at Our May 8th Meeting! \nJoin us on May 8th for an inspiring evening as our talented KCMQG members showcase their Negative Space Challenge mini quilts! This is your chance to see how quilters have embraced the challenge\, using bold expanses of fabric\, intricate quilting textures\, and unexpected layouts to transform “empty” space into a striking design element. \nMembers are invited to create a mini quilt (24″ x 24″ max) that highlights negative space in a unique way. Whether you go for modern minimalism\, high-contrast drama\, or delicate quilting details\, we can’t wait to see your interpretation!  Attendees in person and on Zoom will have an opportunity to share their quilts.  If you would like to have your mini quilt featured at the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival in the KCMQG Negative Space exhibit\, you can leave your mini with Kelly Hubka after the meeting.  There will be additional opportunities to deliver your quilt for inclusion in our KCRQF exhibit\, so stay tuned for those details. \nMark your calendars\, get inspired\, and join us for an evening of creativity and conversation. See you there!

SUMMARY:April 2024 Meeting: Minki Kim
DESCRIPTION:On April 11\, 2024 at the Merriam Community Center come meet Minki Kim. \nMinki Kim is a fabric and pattern designer with her own whimsical style. As a formally trained sculptor and self-taught sewist\, she found that designing fabrics and creating art with fabric and thread were natural steps in her evolution as an artist. Her program will take us all on her journey as we learn about “How Sewing Changed My Life”. She’ll share lots of photos and will be bringing lots of her projects for us to enjoy. \nMinki discovered sewing as a creative outlet when her children were small. She wanted to capture the beauty of ordinary moments\, first with hand embroidery and later recreating them with her sewing machine and fabric—literally drawing with thread. Capturing ordinary moments in beautiful sewing illustrations to make keepsake snapshots of daily life has become her signature style. \nThe author of Sew Illustrated\, Diary in Stitches\, Zakka from the Heart and Zakka Wool Applique (all by C&T Publishing)\, Minki has also designed several fabric collections for Riley Blake Designs. \nCheck out her Instagram @zeriano and her website Sewing Illustration \nTwo of her books\, Zakka from the Heart and Zakka Wool Applique\, are available in our library if you’d like to check out a bit more inspiration! \nKelly Lautenbach – VP of Programming

SUMMARY:March 2024 Meeting: Merrie Ford - Series Work
DESCRIPTION:On March 14th\, Merrie Ford\, a KCMQG member and national speaker\, will talk to us about Working in a Series: Motivation & Inspiration. This lecture is the result of a lifelong love of a specific subject matter\, a desire to explore creative possibilities\, and many changes in her life and the world over the past few years. Drawing from personal interests\, a small book by an artist of the 50’s\, and her process of planning and creating a series of works\, she will give both practical and unusual inspiration to help us all move forward with our own creative lives. \nA little bit about Merrie. She began sewing in 8th grade and primarily made clothing for years. She caught the quilting bug at age 22 and began with traditional quilts and hand quilting. Her creative journey would take her into utility quilts\, modern quilts\, collage\, and original designs. After 20 moves\, she landed in Kansas City\, MO\, and credits the KCMQG with much of her growth and creativity as a Quilter. She now splits time between Missouri & her home state of Montana. Merrie teaches at shops\, guilds\, and retreats all over the nation\, loves the color brown\, and never gets tired of buying fabric at any shop she can find while traveling! \nCannot wait to see what Merrie will inspire us to do in 2024! \nKelly Lautenbach\, VP of Programming

DESCRIPTION:Laura Piland with Slice of Pi Quilts is a local quilter\, pattern designer and ex-math teacher\, “With a last name like Piland – there’s a strong love of pi in our house! Just after finishing my very first quilt almost 12 years ago\, I decided I would try something new with every quilt I made. I’ve made well over 400 quilts since then\, and I still love the thrill of trying new things! Every quilt in this show features a unique and different technique. Bias tape applique\, fabric weaving\, quilt as you go\, prairie points\, and 3-D elements are just a few of the many examples included in the show. Be prepared to be inspired and leave ready to try something new in your next quilt!” \nJoin us February 9\, 2023 at 6:30-8:30pm to see Laura’s trunk show and learn about her quilting journey.

SUMMARY:February 2020 Meeting: Betsy Blodgett
DESCRIPTION:The Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild is excited to announce that Betsy Blodgett will be our guest speaker at our February guild meeting. Betsy will be discussing her interests of quilting and fashion sewing\, exploring how the two intersect in the modern fashion world and how you can combine them in your own sewing world. \nBetsy Blodgett’s early interest in fashion and textiles led to a career in the sewing industry\, which began when she opened bon bon atelier\, a fabric store and sewing studio. She then focused her attention on the design side of the business working with pattern companies Indygo Junction and The Sewing Workshop. In 2016 she launched her podcast Hello Atelier\, a show that explores what it means to be a working artist. Traveling for the podcast\, she found creative inspiration meeting artists and exploring new communities and decided that she needed to bring that experience to the world. Hello Voyager was launched in 2018 as a textile experience production company. Home to the Grand Textile Tours\, which take design-loving guests all over the world\, Hello Voyager is dedicated to creating one-of-a-kind travel experiences that guests can tap into as inspiration in their own studios. Learn more about the 2020 lineup of tours which include Italy\, Scotland\, England & Sweden.

SUMMARY:November 2019 Meeting – Cheryl Brady
DESCRIPTION:Visitors are always welcome. Your first visit is free! Be sure to bring your finished quilts and projects to share at Show & Tell! \nOur November speaker will be Cheryl Brady. \nWhen the door closed on her Japan Airline flight from LA to Kansaii on January 13\, 2019\, Cheryl Brady quickly suspected she wasn’t in Kansas anymore. Thirteen hours later she arrived to meet 20 quilters from six countries who would be her fellow adventurers for two weeks. \nPractically everything was foreign\, but Cheryl did recognize boro\, patchwork\, big stitching\, sashiko\, shibori and indigo. She knew from several Instagram quilters she follows that these techniques were being practiced in the USA. Through hands-on visits in Kyoto\, Nagoya and Tokyo\, culminating in a day visit to the Tokyo International Quilt show\, she witnessed the beauty of these techniques. \nJoin Cheryl as she highlights her travels and observations about the state of modern quilting in Japan compared to the USA. She will showcase two of her favorite Japanese quilters and share selected photos\, souvenirs and quilts she made upon her return. Rest assured\, this presentation will not be your typical Grandpa’s travelogue. \nAbout Cheryl: \nCheryl’s mother and grandmother were skilled sewists; they and 4-H leaders were her first teachers. As a working mom\, Cheryl’s sewing was limited to Halloween costumes and Snoopy outfits. However\, as her consulting work waned\, she looked for more creative outlets and returned to interests in sewing and textiles. Her first meeting at the KCMQG in 2012 featured Weeks Ringle. When she circulated her quilts for up-close examination\, Cheryl knew she had to know more. \nTrips to Seattle last summer to learn about Yukata cottons and to Japan are her latest projects. She currently chairs the KCMQG’s Grant Committee\, which she enjoys because it supports the continuing learning of our members. 2019 is her final year of a three-year term on the MQG Board of Directors. She co-chairs Mission Sewing at Village Church.

SUMMARY:October 2019 Meeting - Hometown Trunkshow
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome two members to share in our Annual Hometown Trunkshow! \nMarilyn Butler:\nMarilyn remembers always having a desire to “make something” and the enjoyment it brings. Her grandmothers were makers of clothing and quilts for themselves and others\, and their hands were often busy with embroidery\, knitting or crocheting. Marilyn’s love of fabric\, color and texture\, undoubtedly\, must have come to her naturally.\nThis love would lead to learning different skills whenever there was an opportunity\, and so it was with quilting. In 1981\, she took quilting classes with a group of co-workers and made a handpieced\, hand quilted sampler quilt. However\, her next quilt wouldn’t come for another twenty years or so. That was when Marilyn started noticing new quilting tools\, faster and easier piecing using the sewing machine\, and above all\, colorful new fabrics that she became excited about quilting again. \nWhen The Modern Quilt Guild was beginning in Los Angeles\, Marilyn really wished for something like it in Kansas City. Within a few months\, the KC Modern Quilt Guild was forming and she couldn’t wait to attend its very first meeting. New friends\, new experiences\, and opportunities for learning new skills–she had found her community.\nMarilyn also loves spending time with her family\, especially her adult children and grandchildren. She loves to travel and finds inspiration in discovering new and different places. \nJudy Chaffee:\nJudy learned to sew from her mother and began making garments at a young age. While pursuing her Bachelor’s degree at Southern Illinois University\, she taught men’s tailoring\, the construction of leather goods\, draping\, and flat pattern making. But it was her Master’s degree in Textiles that really sparked her interest in fabric itself. In 1971\, she completed a groundbreaking thesis on the effects of environmental pollutants on fiber degradation. So it is not surprising that Judy’s quilting so often explores the qualities and possibilities of fabric as a medium. She is known for the manipulation of fabrics\, screen-printing\, fabric painting\, and thread painting. Additionally\, Judy’s quilts are invariably marked by her interest in the way fabric can be a carrier for emotional meaning and familial memory. \nVisitors are always welcome. Your first visit is free! \nBe sure to bring your finished quilts and projects to share at Show & Tell!
