SUMMARY:February 2022 Meeting: Chris Jacobs
DESCRIPTION:At the February meeting\, award-winning T-shirt quilt maker Chris Jacobs will be showing and telling all she knows about T-shirt quilts. She will start with basic materials and supplies\, share several projects illustrating the versatility of this fabric medium and encourage us to imagine a variety of design choices from the tried-and-true traditional square to a less structured modern design. You will walk away from this lecture deciding what kind of project you will tackle at the March workshop. Start collecting your shirts now for an exciting and fun project. \nThis will be a hybrid meeting and you may join in person at Overland Park First Assembly of God Church or via Zoom. SUMMARY:January 2022 Meeting: Cindy Grisdela
DESCRIPTION:We kick off 2022 with Cindy Grisdela\, from Reston\, Virginia\, an an award-winning fiber artist with over 30 years’ experience creating eye-catching quilts. She specializes in improv piecing and design and using color fearlessly. \nAccording to her website\, Cindy comes from a long line of women who have expressed themselves using a needle and thread\, although curiously there weren’t any quilters in her family. Creating with various forms of fabric and thread has been a part of her life since childhood\, and she is self-taught as a fiber artist\, with lots of experimentation along the way. Cindy is the author of Artful Improv and a new book\, Adventures in Improv Quilts\, published in September 2021. \nCindy will also be doing two workshops for KCMQG: Improv Puzzle Blocks and Artful Improv (pictured above). \nThis is a hybrid meeting and can be attended in person or online via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Weeks Ringle Workshop: Composition in Modern Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Due to unfortunate circumstances\, Weeks isn’t able to join us. Her husband and co-creator\, Bill Kerr\, is joining us instead. Bill is an equally expert quilter and instructor. We are excited to learn from him and are sending Weeks wishes for speedy healing. \nComposition is one of the most powerful tools in design. Students with or without design backgrounds are welcome in this class. We will explore elements of composition including proportion\, static and dynamic forms and negative space through a series of explorations using solids. Each student will then develop one or more original mini quilts drawing on concepts learned in class. Mini quilts are small\, (18″x24″ or so)\, quilts that can work as focal points in in your home. \nStudent supplies needed: sewing machine\, rotary cutting equipment\, an assortment of solids in a range of values and hues (we will be working at a small scale\, so smaller pieces/fat quarters/scraps are all useful)\, extension cord\, thread\, seam ripper\, notebook or journal\, and any supplies you like to have handy when quilting. \nClick here to sign up!

SUMMARY:February 2020 Meeting: Betsy Blodgett
DESCRIPTION:The Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild is excited to announce that Betsy Blodgett will be our guest speaker at our February guild meeting. Betsy will be discussing her interests of quilting and fashion sewing\, exploring how the two intersect in the modern fashion world and how you can combine them in your own sewing world. \nBetsy Blodgett’s early interest in fashion and textiles led to a career in the sewing industry\, which began when she opened bon bon atelier\, a fabric store and sewing studio. She then focused her attention on the design side of the business working with pattern companies Indygo Junction and The Sewing Workshop. In 2016 she launched her podcast Hello Atelier\, a show that explores what it means to be a working artist. Traveling for the podcast\, she found creative inspiration meeting artists and exploring new communities and decided that she needed to bring that experience to the world. Hello Voyager was launched in 2018 as a textile experience production company. Home to the Grand Textile Tours\, which take design-loving guests all over the world\, Hello Voyager is dedicated to creating one-of-a-kind travel experiences that guests can tap into as inspiration in their own studios. Learn more about the 2020 lineup of tours which include Italy\, Scotland\, England & Sweden.

SUMMARY:Schoolhouse: Zippered Project Pouch
DESCRIPTION:Note: This is a members-only event. If you haven’t joined\, what are you waiting for? Click here for info. \nDate: January 11\, 2020\nTime: 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM. If anyone would like make additional pouches or sew on other projects\, we can stay until 4:00 \nLocation\nThe Fabric Chic\n170 English Landing Dr\nParkville\, MO 64152 \nThis custom pouch can be made from a vintage\, or modern dish towel or other kitchen linens. Or use any interesting fabric from quilting cotton (great for featuring a large print motif) cotton canvas\, cotton/linen blends or home decor fabric. Most dish towels are 16″ – 20″ wide and can make a pouch that is 12″ – 14″ tall. You can make a larger or smaller project\, depending on the fabric you wish to feature. \nYou will need: \n\nA dish towel or other textile to be used for the front and back of your pouch. You will need two pieces of equal size\, so a towel that is cut in half or a towel with coordinating fabric for the back. If you are using other fabric\, a half yard or two fat quarters that coordinate will be sufficient.\nYou will need a coordinating fabric for binding the zippers and the circumference of the pouch\, OR a coordinating color of extra wide\, double fold bias tape (.5″). You will need about 2 to 2.5 yards of two inch wide binding\, so one 3 yard package of bias tape or a fat quarter of coordinating fabric will be enough. I will have two bias tape making machines at the workshop which we can use to quickly make the bias tape (without burning fingers!) If you would like to prepare in advance\, cut 2″ bias strips of fabric and join them to make one piece 2″ wide by 2.5 yards long.\nA zipper that is wider than the width of your towel (or desired project width). Please select nylon teeth zipper (not metal) – a 22″ garment zipper is great\, a purse or handbag zipper works fine\, as well. Nylon zippers can easily be cut to size\, if a smaller size is needed.\nYour sewing machine and general sewing notions.\nA walking foot can be very helpful\, as well as a zipper foot.\nA ruler that is at least 18″ long.\nWonder tape is also very handy for installing the zipper.\n\nYour class fee will include vinyl and decor bond. If you wish to make more pouches\, these supplies are available for purchase at the Fabric Chic. \nEach participant will receive: \n\n1/2 yard of Decor Bond (Pellon 809) a 1/2 yard – enough for one average size pouch or possibly two smaller ones.\n1/2 yard of 12 gauge clear vinyl – a half yard of 58″ vinyl will make several pouches – for one pouch\, you need a piece as large as your finished project – about 16″ x 15″.\n\nThe Fabric Chic has a variety of zipper colors as well as vinyl and decor bond. \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:November 2019 Meeting – Cheryl Brady
DESCRIPTION:Visitors are always welcome. Your first visit is free! Be sure to bring your finished quilts and projects to share at Show & Tell! \nOur November speaker will be Cheryl Brady. \nWhen the door closed on her Japan Airline flight from LA to Kansaii on January 13\, 2019\, Cheryl Brady quickly suspected she wasn’t in Kansas anymore. Thirteen hours later she arrived to meet 20 quilters from six countries who would be her fellow adventurers for two weeks. \nPractically everything was foreign\, but Cheryl did recognize boro\, patchwork\, big stitching\, sashiko\, shibori and indigo. She knew from several Instagram quilters she follows that these techniques were being practiced in the USA. Through hands-on visits in Kyoto\, Nagoya and Tokyo\, culminating in a day visit to the Tokyo International Quilt show\, she witnessed the beauty of these techniques. \nJoin Cheryl as she highlights her travels and observations about the state of modern quilting in Japan compared to the USA. She will showcase two of her favorite Japanese quilters and share selected photos\, souvenirs and quilts she made upon her return. Rest assured\, this presentation will not be your typical Grandpa’s travelogue. \nAbout Cheryl: \nCheryl’s mother and grandmother were skilled sewists; they and 4-H leaders were her first teachers. As a working mom\, Cheryl’s sewing was limited to Halloween costumes and Snoopy outfits. However\, as her consulting work waned\, she looked for more creative outlets and returned to interests in sewing and textiles. Her first meeting at the KCMQG in 2012 featured Weeks Ringle. When she circulated her quilts for up-close examination\, Cheryl knew she had to know more. \nTrips to Seattle last summer to learn about Yukata cottons and to Japan are her latest projects. She currently chairs the KCMQG’s Grant Committee\, which she enjoys because it supports the continuing learning of our members. 2019 is her final year of a three-year term on the MQG Board of Directors. She co-chairs Mission Sewing at Village Church.

SUMMARY:October 2019 Meeting - Hometown Trunkshow
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome two members to share in our Annual Hometown Trunkshow! \nMarilyn Butler:\nMarilyn remembers always having a desire to “make something” and the enjoyment it brings. Her grandmothers were makers of clothing and quilts for themselves and others\, and their hands were often busy with embroidery\, knitting or crocheting. Marilyn’s love of fabric\, color and texture\, undoubtedly\, must have come to her naturally.\nThis love would lead to learning different skills whenever there was an opportunity\, and so it was with quilting. In 1981\, she took quilting classes with a group of co-workers and made a handpieced\, hand quilted sampler quilt. However\, her next quilt wouldn’t come for another twenty years or so. That was when Marilyn started noticing new quilting tools\, faster and easier piecing using the sewing machine\, and above all\, colorful new fabrics that she became excited about quilting again. \nWhen The Modern Quilt Guild was beginning in Los Angeles\, Marilyn really wished for something like it in Kansas City. Within a few months\, the KC Modern Quilt Guild was forming and she couldn’t wait to attend its very first meeting. New friends\, new experiences\, and opportunities for learning new skills–she had found her community.\nMarilyn also loves spending time with her family\, especially her adult children and grandchildren. She loves to travel and finds inspiration in discovering new and different places. \nJudy Chaffee:\nJudy learned to sew from her mother and began making garments at a young age. While pursuing her Bachelor’s degree at Southern Illinois University\, she taught men’s tailoring\, the construction of leather goods\, draping\, and flat pattern making. But it was her Master’s degree in Textiles that really sparked her interest in fabric itself. In 1971\, she completed a groundbreaking thesis on the effects of environmental pollutants on fiber degradation. So it is not surprising that Judy’s quilting so often explores the qualities and possibilities of fabric as a medium. She is known for the manipulation of fabrics\, screen-printing\, fabric painting\, and thread painting. Additionally\, Judy’s quilts are invariably marked by her interest in the way fabric can be a carrier for emotional meaning and familial memory. \nVisitors are always welcome. Your first visit is free! \nBe sure to bring your finished quilts and projects to share at Show & Tell!
