DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 13\, 2025 for our guest speaker Crystal Manning! \nCrystal is a Kansas City fabric and quilt artist who will share a trunk show of her latest and favorite quilts. \nAfter spending a decade as a graphic designer\, Crystal turned her artistic talents toward surface and textile pattern design. In 2015\, she bought her first sewing machine and began teaching herself to sew\, using her custom-printed Spoonflower fabrics. Though she endured the occasional pinprick and became well-acquainted with her seam ripper\, her passion for sewing and fabric design flourished. \nSince 2017\, Crystal has been designing fabric for Moda Fabrics\, inspiring sewists to create with her stylish collections. She also designs quilt patterns to complement her fabric lines.

Until now\, the process of printing on fabric with dyes seemed difficult to\nlearn and even harder to implement and required lots of “stuff.” But that is not the case anymore. You don’t have to be an “ARTIST” to be successful. This is all about\nplay and experimenting\, the process of letting go. Gel printing is fun and a bit\naddicting!! You will create an astonishing array of designs\, simply and safely\, using\ntextile paints and a variety of techniques. \nGel printing on fabric uses a gelatin plate to press an image onto fabric. DESCRIPTION:On April 11\, 2024 at the Merriam Community Center come meet Minki Kim. \nMinki Kim is a fabric and pattern designer with her own whimsical style. As a formally trained sculptor and self-taught sewist\, she found that designing fabrics and creating art with fabric and thread were natural steps in her evolution as an artist. Her program will take us all on her journey as we learn about “How Sewing Changed My Life”. She’ll share lots of photos and will be bringing lots of her projects for us to enjoy. \nMinki discovered sewing as a creative outlet when her children were small. She wanted to capture the beauty of ordinary moments\, first with hand embroidery and later recreating them with her sewing machine and fabric—literally drawing with thread. This lecture is the result of a lifelong love of a specific subject matter\, a desire to explore creative possibilities\, and many changes in her life and the world over the past few years. Drawing from personal interests\, a small book by an artist of the 50’s\, and her process of planning and creating a series of works\, she will give both practical and unusual inspiration to help us all move forward with our own creative lives. \nA little bit about Merrie. She began sewing in 8th grade and primarily made clothing for years. She caught the quilting bug at age 22 and began with traditional quilts and hand quilting. Her creative journey would take her into utility quilts\, modern quilts\, collage\, and original designs. After 20 moves\, she landed in Kansas City\, MO\, and credits the KCMQG with much of her growth and creativity as a Quilter. She now splits time between Missouri & her home state of Montana. The class will continue using the Exploring Curves Quilt as practice for sewing complex curves. This quilt is a wall hanging made from one large block that uses curved piecing to create the illusion of transparency from overlapping circles. DESCRIPTION:In August\, we are excited to welcome Audrey Esarey of Cotton and Bourbon to the KCMQG! She has always identified as a maker\, and has sewn for as long as she can remember\, but only began quilting in 2005. In 2018\, she set a personal goal to exhibit her work in a juried quilt show\, which motivated her to design and create a series of original quilts. Since then\, her quilts have been exhibited and recognized at Quilt National\, International Quilt Festival\, and QuiltCon. She shares her creative process on Instagram via @CottonandBourbon  You’ll be excited to hear her lecture which focuses on her path to becoming a modern quilter and how she’s applied many traditional techniques in her modern quilts. She’ll discuss the progression of her work and show her Radial Quilts\, Watercolor Quilts\, and a few others too! She will also share information on design inspiration\, favorite artists\, and discuss some quilting highs and lows along her journey. \nThere is a $10 fee for guests which will happily apply to a membership should they decide to join us!

SUMMARY:July 2023 Meeting: Quilt Stories with Mary Thomas
DESCRIPTION:We are always excited when we get to enjoy hearing from our very own members. In July we will welcome Mary Thomas. Mary has been a quilter since 1985.  Mostly self-taught\, she increased her skills in quilting classes\, expos and quilt shows.  She has tried a large number of techniques and quilt styles from Applique to Watercolor (and most of the alphabet in between.)  Mary’s trunk show will include quilts from all the varied techniques and styles that she has worked in.  She says that she was making “…improv before I knew what improv was.”  Mary has exhibited in local quilt shows and the Missouri State Fair\, receiving various ribbons.  One of Mary’s quilts hangs in the Missouri Quilt Museum in Hamilton\, Missouri. \nMary believes that most quilts tell a story\, and she is eager to share with you some of her many Quilt Stories!  She plans to inspire you to your next story with over 50 quilts for you to see.  Please join us in July!
