Community Service Sew Day

SKU: N/A Category:

Journey House is a residential program of the Journey to New Life non-profit which offers a safe, caring, and inclusive living environment to support females reintegrating from incarceration into the community. KCMQG will be making medium-sized NYBBBs for the residents to carry their belongings. Imagine the difference it will make for the women to carry their belongings in a hand created NYBBB vs. a plastic grocery bag. We all know the care and support that a hand-crafted item conveys. Our goal is at least 30 medium-sized bags to be collected between now and the August 22nd meeting.

If you’ve never made the NYBBB (pattern by our very own Kelly Lautenbach), then this is your chance! And if you’ve made one before, you know how quick and easy it is to sew up an elegant tote bag!  Several AMAZING arrangements have been made to make it super easy to participate in this project!

  1. Kelly is offering the pattern for $6 (50% off retail) at KC Maker and Fabric Chic between now and August 15th.
    • To get a 50% coupon to redeem at one of those two locations, visit the Community Service table and commit to making one bag.  If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can email the Guild at [email protected]
  2. A roll of Soft and Stable has been purchased wholesale (the interfacing for the bag and main thing required besides fabric) and yardage will be available for purchase at the July guild meeting.
  3. For those who commit to making a bag, in July they will receive the “just created” dimensions which provide a new medium sized bag that maximizes getting two medium sized bags out of one 36” x 58” yard of Soft and Stable.
  4. Journey House NYBBB sew day at Art Nest Retreat Center on Saturday, July 27th from 10 am – 3 pm. Cost = commitment of one bag for Journey House.

This is an amazing opportunity to check out the recently opened Art Nest Retreat Center owned by KCMQG member Tina Jackson and her husband Damien.

Instructors will be on hand to explain and assist construction.

Come prepared to the sew day with the following:

      • 29” x 36” quilted rectangle which includes inside lining fabric/Soft & Stable/outside fabric.
      • 120” of 1 3/4” to 2” wide matching strapping or fabric covered Soft & Stable or batting.
      • Additional fabric for binding as per the pattern.

In addition to the items in the supply list above, please be sure to bring your sewing machine, foot pedal, power cord, and any other basic supplies you normally sew with!
