Join speaker Mary Fons for a captivating lecture, Sold: Quilts in Fine Art. Are quilts art? You might have an answer to the question — but what if it’s the wrong question? Fine art that depicts quilts or incorporates actual quilts are exhibited in museums around the world. In the 1960s, superstar artists like Robert Rauschenberg and Romare Bearden were doing it; today, Sanford Biggers, Tracey Emin, and Bisa Butler show us that quilts have a place in the vaunted, exclusive domain of fine art. In this lecture, “quilt nerd” Mary Fons will examine works of quilt-adjacent art, from Amy Sherald’s portrait of Michelle Obama to Judy Chicago’s ‘The Dinner Party’ and many others. These works are inspiring and fascinating, but should quiltmakers be striving for legitimacy in a system that has excluded them for generations? Or is it the highest compliment we can get to be honored in the art world? This lecture will inspire and encourage anyone who loves quilts.
