The KC Modern Quilt Guild held its very first retreat at the beginning of April. We met at the lovely Spring Hill Suites in Lawrence, KS for a weekend filled with sewing, shopping, snacking, and very little sleeping.

The retreat started on Friday afternoon in the ballroom. It was so much fun to sew and visit with friends. Inspiration was everywhere: in the hotel decor; on the design walls that went up quickly; even on a big screen that displayed Flickr images of beautiful quilts. Toni Caro had us laughing after dinner at a fun “left-right” swapping game and at the end we got to open a package of fabrics with a little gift inside from a fellow quilter.

Carla Timberlake and Denise Best each hosted a wonderful class on Saturday. They are fantastic teachers and we were so lucky to have an opportunity to learn from them. Actually, it was so easy to share and learn from everyone around us the whole weekend. Jaime showed some of us how to clean and oil our machines and Kristin amazed us with her Zentangle sketches. We even introduced some of the hotel staff to the wonderful world of modern quilting. Little tips and tricks were easy to pick up when had to opportunity to sew together all weekend.

It was so fun to be downtown Lawrence! Great shopping and restaurants were close by, and we even witnessed Massachusetts Street fill with fans as KU won the Final Four.

We were completely spoiled with the generous donations of so many people and businesses that made our fun giveaways and prizes possible.
